Amnesty International Issues A Pre-Election Advisory On Firearms
Before Amnesty International lectures us on how we should live and conduct our elections, we need to remind them of their failures. The body has failed to free the oppressed across the world despite collecting billions for the same purpose.
Thankfully, such a form of tyranny cannot thrive in the United States because Americans are armed and will fight any form of oppression.
Despite its failure in tackling the more pressing issues around the world, Amnesty International issued an advisory warning of a heightened "threat of gun violence" during the election. Consequently, the international body called on the US governors to ban firearms around and inside polling stations "to ensure the safety of voters, poll workers, and community."
Amnesty said there was a heightened risk of possible voter intimidation during the exercise. The organization cited the reported increase in firearm sales, COVID-19 pandemic, and the resultant unemployment as predisposing factors for electoral gun violence.
The international body also alleged that the rise in "white supremacist violence" was a risk factor. Amnesty said there were plans to recruit independent armed election monitors in battleground states by right-wing groups.
Additionally, Amnesty said that white supremacist groups leaders urged members to buy ammunition ahead of the polls. Latinx and African Americans were most vulnerable, according to Amnesty International.
However, Amnesty conveniently forgot to mention how the Black Lives Matter's widespread violence would negatively affect the polls. Unlike the alleged "white supremacist violence," BLM's violence, disruption, and destruction of property are evident.
"Given the surge in gun sales, the recent rise in political unrest and violence, and the sobering reality that there are more guns than people across the United States, Americans are more likely than ever to come face to face with armed individuals at their polling place," Ernest Covernson, an End Gun Violence Campaign manager said. " There are concrete actions that state officials can and must take to intervene."
Amnesty made various recommendations, including banning firearms at polling stations and increased funding for gun violence prevention and support for local gun control laws.
The organization claims to be impartial but has, in the past, called for comprehensive background checks, firearm registration, mandatory training, firearm storage laws, and "assault weapons" and high capacity magazine bans. Technically, Amnesty has come short of endorsing Joe Biden, given that it's gun policy mirrors that of the Democratic presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
