Armed Citizens Protect Businesses from Looting During the Ongoing Minneapolis Race Riots
While some actions of the Minneapolis police department and race relations leave a lot to be desired, some armed citizens utilized their Second Amendment rights to protect businesses from suffering irreparable damages from the ongoing riots. That’s one of the advantages of the rights to bear arms: guaranteeing safety during moments of uncertainty.
Armed people can defend their businesses from external events that they had no control over regardless of the political atmosphere. The current chaos in Minneapolis was instigated by the death of George Floyd, an African American, in the hands of a white police officer on allegations of forgery.
Four armed citizens decided to help business owners keep looters at bay. The desperate business owners tried to keep looters away using machetes before the armed “rednecks” stepped in. They were moving around helping businesses keep looters away. The armed men said they did not oppose the reasons for the protests, but wished the looting would stop. Sincerely, no business should suffer the consequences of events that it did not instigate.
“… Before there were cops there were Americans. So here we are,” one of the men remarked.
The second man pointed out their position on the riots.
“Justice for George Floyd but I hope they stop looting at some point.”
The Second Amendment rights is a double-edged sword. Looters are less likely to invade a business protected by armed citizens. Similarly, the police are less likely to infringe on the rights of citizens to conduct peaceful demonstrations, as has been evident during most peaceful armed protests. While the current protests are anything but peaceful, having the means to defend your investments overrides any other cause.
The application of the Second Amendment rights in defending commercial establishments is hardly a new concept. A well-known example is the “Roof Koreans.” The incident took six days after the acquittal of Los Angeles Police Department officers after using excessive force in the blatant beating of Rodney King. The event was widely aired on TV broadcasts and prompted exceedingly violent riots.
While many people wish for justice for people who suffered injustices in the hands of some errant police officers, keeping their businesses safe becomes the most immediate need. Depending on law enforcement agencies to protect businesses in such situations will end in regrets and irreparable damages for hardworking Americans. It is likely more armed citizens guarded their businesses during the ongoing riots, and this instance is just an example of the advantages of owning a firearm.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
