Armed Neighbors Intervene in the Brutal Beating of an Elderly Man; Suspect Attempts a Gun Grab

Neighbors intervened in an attack where a man was beating an elderly man with a metal pipe only for the suspect to turn on them on Floral Drive in Barrow County, Georgia. According to neighbors, the attacker who is a known person in the area knocked on the elderly couple’s door, then pulled out the 86-year-old Calvin Lee, and started beating him with a metal pipe. Lee’s wife started screaming, which alerted the neighbors.

A man and his son grabbed a gun and rushed to stop the assault. The attacker punched one of the men and tried to grab the gun from the other. The firearm owner opened fire, striking the suspect twice. Neighbors described the elderly couple as fantastic people, while the responders said they didn’t know the family well but just wanted to help.

Lee was airlifted for treatment, and the criminal was hospitalized and is out of danger. He will be charged with burglary, aggravated assault, and criminal trespass. The neighbors won’t face any charges for shooting the invader.

Lee survived the ordeal, and the suspect was apprehended because of the intervention of an armed citizen. He could have sustained severe injuries or even died on the spot. While it is easy to overlook an assailant armed with a metal pipe, over 3.1% of all murders involve the use of a blunt object such as a metal pipe.

Sometimes law-abiding citizens are charged for using their firearms to defend themselves against armed criminals. However, trying to grab a gun is not a smart move and always has the same result regardless of how amicable the firearm holder intended to be. In this case, there are no questions on the justification of using the firearm, as the criminal received what he bargained for.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
