Biden Calls for an "Assault Weapons" Ban During Speech

President Joe Biden reiterated his intention to ban modern sporting rifles and magazines holding more than ten rounds during his speech on Wednesday.

He taunted an “assault weapons” and “large capacity” magazine ban as the solution to what he called an “epidemic of gun violence.”

“I will do everything in my power to protect the American people from this epidemic of gun violence, but it’s time for Congress to act as well,” Biden said. “We need a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines again.”

The president claimed that there was “no possible justification for having 100 rounds – 100 bullets – in a weapon.”

He urged Senate Republicans to join Democrats in passing gun control laws he claimed had overwhelming support, including gun owners.

He also praised the 1990s “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazine ban, claiming that it reduced “gun violence.”

However, the Justice Department concluded that the prohibition was futile in preventing crimes committed using “assault weapons.”

This was because the crimes committed using these weapons were too few that the ban had no measurable effect.

According to the 2019 FBI Unified Crime Report, fewer people were killed using “rifles of any kind,” including “assault weapons,” than those murdered using knives, blunt objects, and even choking, stomping, or being beaten to death.

Similarly, California, having an assault weapons ban, had more deaths (1,142) than Texas (1,064) in 2019.

Additionally, gun violence has reduced than in the 90s even without an existing “assault weapons” ban or universal background checks.

Biden also talked about banning Ghost guns by regulating gun kits used to make firearms at home.

“Anyone from a criminal to a terrorist could buy this kit and, in as little as 30 minutes, put together a lethal weapon,” the president said.

A leaked ATF document published by The Reload showed that the agency would redefine what constitutes a receiver to include any item that could be readily converted into one.

He also urged for the enactment of universal background checks. Fact-checkers debunked Biden’s earlier false claims that anybody could buy “whatever you want” without background checks at gun shows.
