Biden Says He'll Ban Assault Weapons, High-Capacity Magazines, and Enact Universal Background Checks

The Democratic Presidential contender, Joe Biden, finally broke his silence on gun control on Sunday, few days to the election. Biden reiterated his commitment to banning “assault weapons” and “high capacity magazine” if he were elected the president.

In a series of tweets, Biden claimed that it was time to act to end “gun violence,” a term used by democrats to justify the violation of the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans.

“It’s long past time we take action to end the scourge of gun violence in America,” Biden posted on Twitter.

“As president, I’ll ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, implement universal background checks, and enact other common-sense reforms to end our gun violence epidemic,” he continued.

Biden promises to implement a “voluntary” buyback program for existing semi-automatic “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines or force firearm owners to register them under the National Firearms Act and pay a $200 tax per item.

His Vice President pick Kamala Harris had proposed a mandatory buyback with no grandfathering of existing firearms.

Biden’s gun control surrogate, Beto O’Rourke, ran on a gun confiscation campaign and failed. His “Hell, yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47” speech earned him a ticket out of the presidential race. Many Democrats tried to distance the party from his gun confiscation agenda.

However, Biden’s campaign recycled him into his campaign, claiming he was best suited for gun control in the Biden administration.

“I want to make something clear; I’m going to guarantee you this is not the last you’ve seen of him,” Biden talked of O’Rourke in Dallas. “You’re going to take care of the gun problem with me. You’re going to be the one who leads this effort.”

“I’m counting on you. I’m counting on you,” Biden continued. “We need you badly, the state needs you, the country needs you. You’re the best.”

Despite his symbolic appointment, O’Rourke remained mostly invisible throughout the campaign. He appeared briefly in El Paso, Texas, alongside Jill Biden to rally voters for Joe.

Democrats also toned-down gun control after realizing it was no longer a winning subject as initially anticipated. This was after Americans bought firearms in record numbers, including liberals and over 5 million first-time gun owners.

Various gun control groups supporting Biden, such as Bloomberg’s Everytown For Gun Safety, Forward Majority, and Brady Campaign, diversified their message to include other issues such as healthcare and the environment instead of gun control.

Meanwhile, PolitiFact tried to dispute that gun owners must pay a $200 tax for each NFA item under the Biden administration.
