Sunday was the third anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, which claimed 17 lives and wounded another 17. President Joe Biden exploited the opportunity to push for more gun control including an “assault weapons” ban. Biden said that his administration would not wait for another similar incident to take place.
Biden reiterated his campaign promises to impose universal background checks, “assault weapons” and “large capacity” magazine bans. He also demanded the repeal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). The statute protects arms dealers from the liability of third-party actions which they have no control over.
“Today I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons on our streets,” Biden’s statement read.
Days before, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki disclosed that Biden administration’s top officials held a virtual meeting with gun control groups including Brady, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Moms Demand Action to discuss gun control. Moms Demand Action embraced Biden administration calls for more gun control laws on Parkland's anniversary.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also promised to enact gun control laws in the House.
"We will enact these and other life-saving bills and deliver the progress that the Parkland community and the American people deserve and demand," Pelosi’s statement read.
Although Democrats control Congress, passing gun control will a monumental task. Despite having 50 senators, convincing 10 additional legislators to support the gun control bills will be an uphill task.
Additionally, gun rights groups will also challenge every gun law enacted through executive orders. However, this does not diminish the threat posed by the Biden administration especially in the weaponization of the ATF and other trade-centric measures targeting the gun industry.
