Disgraced Texas Republican House Speaker, Dennis Bonnen, has released a statement today stating that he will not seek reelection for House District 25.
Following months of scrutiny over the existence of a recording from Empower Texans President Michael Quinn Sullivan, and the subsequent public release of it, the embattled Speaker has announced his retirement from the Texas House after over 20 years.
“After much prayer, consultation, and thoughtful consideration with my family, it is clear that I can no longer seek re-election as State Representative of District 25, and subsequently, as Speaker of the House,” Bonnen said in his a statement.
Pressure really began mounting against him following lies he pushed about Texas Gun Rights Executive Director, Chris McNutt, where Bonnen said McNutt showed up to his private residence to harass his family over Constitutional Carry. Text messages to LSGR founder Justin Delosh and myself, GPS tracking data, and even DPS body cam video proved that was the furthest thing from the truth.
Sullivan cited this as one of his many reasons for recording the meeting, in order to protect himself from this sort of political hit.
