California Mayor Urges Newsom To Reopen Gun Stores Citing the Release of Hundreds of Inmates
Clovis Mayor Drew Bessinger wrote a letter to California governor Gavin Newsom asking him to allow gun shops to remain open during the Stay at Home orders. Bessinger said he was concerned about the large number of inmates released from the Fresno county jail as well as California State Prison. The inmates regained their freedom to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Under the current release program, the judiciary is releasing some detainees without any bail. Bessinger said the release of the inmates increases the chances of law-abiding citizens being victimized by the criminals. He added that the criminals had already demonstrated their unwillingness to live in harmony with the rest of the community.
“Taking our citizens’ right to purchase firearms and ammunition under the guise of an emergency order would embolden criminals and frighten an already stressed citizenry,” Mayor Bessinger said.
Because he is also the head of police at Fresno Yosemite International Airport, Mayor Bessinger said he had a duty to resist orders that would put law-abiding citizens in danger of victimization by dangerous criminals.
Governor Newsom avoided issuing directives on the status of gun shops, leaving the decision to local authorities and law enforcement agencies. Some local authorities have taken the opportunity to close gun shops despite the federal government’s directives to keep them in operation. The closing of gun shops has also been the subject of various lawsuits in which Newsom is also mentioned.
Lucky for Mayor Bessinger, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims decided to keep gun shops open. However, anti-gun legislators were pressuring Gov. Newsom to close gun stores. Assemblyman Miguel Santiago urged Newsom to close gun shops citing racial hatred and panic. It is not surprising that anti-gun democrats would use any imaginable excuse to infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens while allowing criminals to walk free.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
