Chicago Mayor Attributes the Increase in Crime to Coronavirus, Guns, and the Death Of Floyd

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is clutching at straws to explain the increase in violence in the Windy City. Mayor Lightfoot said the cause of violence in the city was complicated. According to her, coronavirus and the death of Floyd led to increased crime in the city. Lightfoot also said the city of Chicago had “too many guns on the streets.”

When asked why Chicago had higher incidences of gun violence, Lightfoot said, “That’s a complicated question. We have way too many guns on the streets.”

She did not realize that her remarks contradicted her gun control agenda. Mayor Lightfoot, just like other anti-gun administrators, preferred passing gun control laws targeting law-abiding citizens. Despite regulating lawfully acquired firearms, the gun problem persists in Chicago because criminals do not obey the law.

The state of Illinois has unique gun control laws that require firearm owners to obtain a Firearms Owners Identification card. The state has background checks as well as a total ban on open carry and various limitations on concealed carry.

The city of Chicago has stricter laws than the state with “assault weapons” and firearm restrictions in multiple places. The city also has strict lost firearm reporting laws to ensure lawfully acquired weapons do not end up in the wrong hands, but still, the problem of illegal guns remains.

The firearms used in committing crimes do not accidentally end up in the hands of criminals. The lawbreakers deliberately obtain them to commit crimes. Passing gun control measures against law-abiding citizens will not compel criminals to submit themselves for background checks.

They intentionally avoid going through the system to remain unidentifiable after committing crimes. Regardless of how many background checks are performed on law-abiding citizens, the number of illegal firearms will remain constant unless the city implements measures to target the actual criminals.

However, that is unlikely to happen as long as the Chicago Police Department’s hands are tied. Lightfoot wants law enforcement officers to treat criminals with kid gloves to create “better relationships with the community.” By doing so, Lightfoot endangers the same community she claims to care about, leaving it at the mercy of the armed criminals.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
