Constitutional Carry Bill Introduced In Tennessee

Tennesseans could be allowed to carry firearms without a concealed carry permit if a bill filed by a Republican legislator is approved.

Rep. Bruce Griffey (R - District 75) sponsored HB0018 that would allow law-abiding firearm owners to openly or concealed carry firearms without a permit. Rep. Griffey said that regardless of the permit requirements, criminals continue to bear arms illegally and threaten Tennesseans' lives.

"I, therefore, see no logical reason why law-abiding Tennesseans should face possible criminal persecution for possessing a firearm consistent with their rights under the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and Section 26 of the Tennessee Constitution for their own safety and the safety of others," Rep. Griffey told FOX 17.

The veteran lawmaker wondered why a law-abiding Tennessean should have to face an armed criminal barehanded because of the existing laws. He added that law enforcement could not be everywhere to protect citizens from armed criminals.

He argued that "citizens retain the ultimate right to protect themselves from the threat of death or violence, and this right must not be infringed upon."

The new proposal received support from Gov. Bill Lee, who openly endorsed constitutional carry in Tennessee in February.

"The Second Amendment is clear and concise and secures the freedoms of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms," Lee said. "I am pleased to announce Constitutional Carry legislation today that will protect the Second Amendment rights of Tennesseans, while also stiffening penalties on criminals who steal or illegally possess firearms."

Gov. Lee is very right to point out that what is needed in Tennessee is more rights for law-abiding citizens and tougher penalties for criminals. However, most gun control activists support stricter restrictions for law-abiding citizens and milder punishment of criminals. That is the reason why gun control always fails in reducing crime.
