Democrats Introduce a Gun Control Package to Accompany Biden's Executive Actions
Gun control legislators introduced a slew of gun control bills to accompany Biden’s attempt to restrict legal gun ownership in the U.S.
The package titled “Protecting Our Communities Act,” includes new and previously introduced proposals intended to close imaginary loopholes.
The package would also codify the Biden administration’s final rule on bump stocks’ regulation. The final rule classifies bump stocks as machine guns regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA).
H.R. 1454, the Ghost Guns Are Guns Act regulates home assembled firearms. It would redefine firearm assembly kits as firearms and require background checks. Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D NY-13) and Brad Schneider (IL-10) introduced the proposal on March 1, 2021.
H.R. 2466, the Law Enforcement Protection Act, would regulate “armor-piercing, concealable weapons” under the National Firearms Act (NFA).
U.S. Rep. Val Demings (D FL-10), the bill’s sponsor claims that manufacturers exploit technical loopholes to produce “unregulated concealable assault weapons” capable of penetrating body armor.
The proposal would reclassify certain firearms and put them out of the reach of law-abiding gun owners. However, it would hardly disrupt the illegal channels that criminals use to obtain similar types of firearms.
H.R. 1769, the NICS Denial Notification Act, would require the FBI to notify local law enforcement authorities whenever the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) blocks an individual from obtaining a firearm.
Local law enforcement authorities could use the information to observe, investigate, or prosecute people who fail background checks. The Justice Department must also publish data on NICS denial prosecutions.
Rep. Quigley, Mike (D IL-5) introduced the proposal in March and was referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
