Elizabeth Banks: The Stand Your Ground "BS" Is "Permission To Kill" and Excuse To Use Deadly Weapon
Actress Elizabeth Banks spoke against the “Stand Your Ground Laws” passed in Ohio House on Thursday. The “Charlie’s Angels” actor described the laws as a “permission to kill” and "justified reasons to use a deadly weapon."
She narrated a childhood incident that informed her hostility towards the Americans' right to self-defense against dangerous attackers.
“Stand Your Ground is BS,” Banks said, narrating how they jumped fences to play hide and seek with her cousins, some of whom were “big guys.”
“There were a few easily-jumped fences in the neighborhood but also houses with no fences at all. A new neighbor moved onto our street. Apparently, he mistook us hiding behind trees in his unfenced yard at 9 pm for... burglars? Predators?” Banks continued.
The “Mrs. America” actress described how a new property owner confronted them using a “professional bow and arrow” and fired without warning.
“This guy didn’t yell out ‘who’s there’ or ‘get off my property or I’m calling the cops’ or any other question or warning,” Banks tweeted.
The "Power Rangers" star said that the property owner “shot at children” hitting a tree in an apparent warning shot. Apparently, Banks appears to contradict herself after claiming that the owner didn't warn them and intended to harm the children.
“Message received, WE yelled out that we were just playing and could he let us please run away without shooting. Then we ran.”
The "Press Your Luck" show host added that her dog would sometimes get lost and trespass into her neighbors’ property. Banks and others would go around looking for the stray animal.
“All I can think about when people pretend Stand Your Ground is about anything other than permission to kill people are those moments when I myself stepped onto a neighbor’s property,” she added.
Banks said that the “Stand Your Ground Law” does not protect people except endanger their neighbors and justify the use of a dangerous weapon.
“Where is the evidence that “Stand Your Ground” does anything but endanger your neighbors, their dogs, their kids? It helps nobody but people who want justified reasons to use a deadly weapon.”
Banks concluded that the property owner would have no regrets after killing the children because of the stand your ground laws.
“I don’t want to live in a world where we fear our neighbors so much that we can’t freely lose a ball/dog/frisbee or cut through somebody’s yard to avoid harassment - all things I have done. What yards did you wander into and why?”
There is no end to the ignorance coming from Hollywood and Elizabeth Banks is just one example.
Ohio Senate is expected to pass the bill although Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine could veto the bill.
