The former Vice President and Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden has no short supply of bad ideas on gun control. While his past ridiculous measures are aimed at ordinary Americans, Biden has one for law enforcement. However, his concept is non-workable and dangerous for both citizens and the police.
Joe Biden said that police should be trained to shoot a suspect on the legs when charging at police officers.
"We also have to fundamentally change the way police are trained," Biden said. "The idea that instead of standing there and teaching a cop when there's an unarmed person that's coming at them with a knife, so they shoot him in the leg instead of in the heart, is a very different thing. There's a lot of different things that can change."
Gun experts say the idea of shooting a person in the leg does not guarantee that the threat actor would be stopped. A suspect could be shot on the legs and still keep charging at the victim or the officers.
It is also challenging to shoot a person's legs, especially when they are moving. Police accuracy is abysmal when under threat. Police accuracy of aiming at the center of the body is a measly 35% while half of the shootings end in total misses. In some cases, the number of bullets fired could not be determined. Telling the police to shoot on the leg will likely result in complete misses of suspects. This implies that Biden would like to see more police killed by criminals.
Biden's idea also suggests the police could be allowed to use firearms in non-lethal ways. This provision would lead to the police shooting more people because shooting them on the legs is justified and legally considered non-lethal. Currently, the police use guns as a last resort. Allowing them to use the weapon more in ways "that do not endanger" the life of citizens would lead to more shootings. Biden, therefore, indirectly supports police brutality and the misuse of the gun.
Lastly, shooting on the leg could still lead to the death of the suspect. Hitting the suspect on the femoral artery could cause excessive bleeding and loss of pressure leading to death. Similarly, bullets aimed at the leg could end up hitting other parts of the body when the suspect is ducking and charging.
Like most of his ideas, Biden's suggestion is unworkable and even more dangerous than its alternatives. The Democratic primaries candidate should just give up trying to protect criminals and focus on protecting the police and law-abiding citizens.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
