Ex-Cop to Congress: 'I Will Not Comply!'
A former Tulsa Police department police officer swore not to comply with the proposed weapons ban during a House Judiciary Committee meeting chaired by Jerrold Nadler (D-NY-10). Ms. Dianna Muller had served in the police department for 22 years and was among those present during the hearing.
Ms. Muller questioned the practicality of the ban whose achievement would only be turning 150 million legal gun owners into felons.
“Please don’t legislate the 150 million people just like me into being criminals. It has happened. You’ve already done it,” The former Tulsa Police Department officer said. “I was a bump stock owner, and I had to make a decision: do I become a felon, or do I comply? Should the government pass an assault-weapons ban, I will not comply.”
During the same hearing, Addy Biggs (R-AZ-5) highlighted that only 1.3% of criminals held for gun-related crimes had obtained their firearms legally. Additionally, he pointed out that more than half of the criminals had either stolen the firearm or obtained it from a crime scene. He, therefore, pointed out how the ban was not going to target the actual criminals but legal gun owners.
Various speakers questioned the practicality of the ban. Amy Swearer, a Senior Legal Policy Analyst at the Heritage Foundation cited the ambiguity in the definition of what constitutes an “assault rifle”.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH-4) pointed out that the Second Amendment does not provide special circumstances under which the government could infringe on citizens’ rights to bear firearms based on the firearm features.
The hearing was overshadowed, however, by the recent developments in the Trump-Ukraine saga that had the Democrats ganging up for a possible Trump’s impeachment. This is despite recent promises of a possible “solution” to the bipartisan gun legislation talks that have been ongoing between the Republicans and the Democrats.
Ms. Muller was the winner of the 2015 World Shooting Championship women’s title. She now heads the DC Project, a non-profit which encourages building relationships between women and legislators in matters related to gun ownership and the Second Amendment.
