Gallup Poll: Less than Half of Americans Want Stricter Gun Laws

Gallup surveyed 1023 American adults on how satisfied they were with the current gun laws. The pollster found that 56% of Americans felt dissatisfied with the existing gun laws, while 42% approved the current measures.

Among the dissatisfied, 41% said they wanted stricter laws, 8% wanted fewer gun laws, while 7% wanted the existing laws to remain in place. In 2018, 46% of Americans wanted more gun control laws, indicating a decline of 5% within the past two years.

Unsurprisingly, Gallup uses a cryptic title, “Americans Remain Largely Dissatisfied With U.S. Gun Laws” to imply that more Americans want more gun control. The mainstream media and gun control activists will pick on this survey headline and exploit the survey in marketing gun control.

Given that dissatisfaction with gun laws is primarily seen among Democrats, it follows that people who are dissatisfied prefer stricter rather than more lenient laws,” the report authors say.

What the researchers conveniently ignore is that about 60% of Americans want the existing gun laws to remain the same or repealed, thus opposing more gun regulation.

Meanwhile, 69% of Republicans were satisfied with the current laws while only 22% of Democrats felt the same, a 47% gap. Gallup says that the gap was 22% before 2018. In 2012, 40% of Democrats approved the existing firearm laws, while only 17% were satisfied with the current firearm regulations in 2020.

Biden called for stricter gun laws on the third anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting. His administration also held a virtual meeting with gun control groups, including Brady, Giffords, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Moms Demand Action.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also said that the administration had no timeline to enact gun control but Biden could still use executive action.
