Gun Control Groups Demand A Universal Ban of Open Carry in Major Stores Citing COVID-19 Incidents

A group of leftist gun control groups demanded that US major stores ban open carry within their premises because of COVID-19 related gun incidents. The coalition comprising of Guns Down America, March for Our Lives, and the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence wrote a letter to 18 major stores urging them to change their gun policy to and prevent openly carrying customers from accessing their stores.

Some of the companies addressed by the letter include Family Dollar, McDonald's, 7-Eleven, and Waffle house. Several stores addressed by the letter have experienced gun-related incidents during the stay at home period. The gun groups claim the gun-related incidents are proof that the stores should ban open carry, according to the American Independent. Walmart has an existing ban on open carry after a shooting incident in one of its stores in Texas in 2019.

"Guns have no place in our supermarkets, movie theaters, restaurants, and other places of commerce," March for Our Lives executive director, Alexis Confer, said. "Today, we call on corporations all across the country to put the safety and well-being of people first."

Unsurprisingly, the hypocritical gun control activists are trying to use incidents involving criminals who refused to comply with regulations to support the need for similar restrictions. For example, Kevin Watson shot a cook at Waffle House because he was denied entry without a mask. The criminal was also being sought for another shooting elsewhere. Similarly, the shooting incident at Family Dollar was a result of a shooter’s family member denial of access for not wearing a mask.

It doesn't appear like prohibiting open carry would have prevented Watson or other criminals from bringing firearms and shooting the stores’ employees. The stores already prohibited entry with masks, but the criminals did not care about the regulations. Criminals have a bad reputation for failing to obey laws that try to prevent them from committing crimes.

Consequently, the argument for banning open carry is just a red herring used to hijack the debate of what needs to be done. For example, having tougher laws would keep felons like Watson out of the streets without undermining the defensive capability of the law-abiding citizens.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
