Guns, Bibles, And Shoes: Church Turns Basement into Shooting Range for Women's Firearm Training

New Prospect Baptist Church, Cincinnati, has new prospects for a vulnerable section of its congregation: safety. The church opened its basement as a training section for women to fire a .22 caliber handgun. The largest exclusive female training has attracted about 200 women who have chosen self-defense over victimhood. The participants cited similar reasons for taking the shooting lesson. Most indicated they were afraid of being alone at home or walking in certain neighborhoods. Importantly, they also stated that they were tired of being scared of guns.

The training lessons were the efforts of two ministers, Rev. Damon Lynch III and Cincinnati City Councilman, Jeff Pastor. Preparations for the training began earlier this year around January 8, when Pastor announced the class on Facebook.

The inspiration behind the training is countless numbers of women facing kidnapping, sex trafficking, rape, and domestic abuse. The class filled up all the 200 positions within the first week. During the actual training which began on February 8, the turnout was impressive. A high percentage of the women, 179, turned up for the lessons despite the horrible weather.

The women who took up the class had various levels of experience with guns. Some were total beginners, while others had more training on handling guns. The church also invited trained professionals to train the women. The Cincinnati-based church contracted the services of Arm the Populace, an authorized CCW licensing firm.

The training included various aspects of gun ownership, including target practice, gun safety, gun laws, obtaining a license, as well as where to get licenses. The lesson attracted a large population of black women who, according to various statistics, have one of the highest growth rates in firearm ownership per demographics.

“African American women are much more likely to be sex trafficked," Pastor said. "I think that it is critically important. I mean, women in general, it's critically important."

Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
