Highway Gunman Fatally Shot by A Licensed Handgun Owner in Self-Defense
Law enforcement agents at the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office, Delta Township, Lansing, Michigan, received multiple reports of a gunman standing at West Saginaw Highway on 6500 block and shooting at passing vehicles. Reports said the gunman walked down Saginaw Highway, pointing his gun at random strangers and discharging his firearm during the morning rush hour. It was a disaster waiting to happen.
However, one licensed handgun owner used his firearm in self-defense after coming face to face with the random shooter. The 22-year old licensed concealed carry permit holder stopped at Brookside Drive when the armed criminal stepped in front of his car and pointed a handgun at his head.
The car owner got out of the vehicle, pulled his handgun, and shot him multiple times. The 26-year old resident of Walker, Grand Rapids, died on the spot. Police confirmed the 22-year old had a valid license and was cooperating with the investigations. Witnesses corroborated the story indicating it was a clear case of self-defense.
The motive of the random shooting is still unclear. Police have not released more details about the license holder or the dead highway gunman except that the random shooter was Black and the 22-year old was white. However, speculations would only point to a possible mental health issue, which is the leading cause of mass shootings.
Regardless of the motives, and without the intervention of the armed citizen, many lives would have been ended by the random shooter. The police received reports of a gunman endangering the lives of motorists but only responded after the criminal was no longer a threat.
Perhaps they were not aware of the exact location of the highway shooter, or they were on the way before an armed citizen neutralized the threat. However, this case proves the police cannot always be relied on to take care of every security threat on time, and self-defense is crucial for law-abiding citizens.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
