Illinois Governor Designates Gun Shops as Essential Business, Excludes them from Forced Shutdown
Democratic Governor Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued an executive order which labeled gun shops as essential businesses, thus saving them from forced shutdown due to coronavirus epidemic. Various states and local authorities have issued similar orders but restricting the sale, transfer, or transporting of firearms. Gov. Pritzker’s order clearly marked businesses that, according to the governor, constitute essential or life-sustaining businesses. Any business not qualifying as an essential business will face closure indefinitely until the crisis is under control.
Gov. Pritzker indicated that firearm sellers and retailers could remain open because they are crucial for safety and security. Gun rights groups had consistently stated that possession of firearms was paramount, especially during a crisis when people were in panic mode and needed a way to protect their supplies. Gun rights activists warmly received the governor’s classification, urging others to emulate his example.
“When an anti-gun Democrat Governor declares that essential businesses include firearm and ammunition suppliers and retailers for purposes of safety and security, that is really a big deal,” Alan Gottlieb of the Second Amendment Foundation said.
Gov. Pritzker’s embracement of gun rights during the crisis is unprecedented. Most Democratic politicians have capitalized on the epidemic as an excuse for denying residents their second amendment rights. Additionally, Illinois is among the states where gun rights are a privilege. He is also among the first governors to declare firearms essential for the combat of the coronavirus epidemic that has placed most states in a state of lockdown.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
