Democrats continue pressing Joe Biden to use executive powers if confirmed as president to force progressive issues, including gun control.
However, Biden acknowledges that the use of the executive power on gun control is “beyond bounds.” He admits that he could achieve some objectives using executive action, but such powers were not the silver bullet that the progressives had expected.
”So there’s some things that I’m going to be able to do by executive order. I’m not going to hesitate to do it, but what I’m not going to do is … I am not going to violate the Constitution,” The Intercept reported.
He added that he would not use executive authority when it was under question as the Leftists wish. He noted that banning assault weapons and police reforms were among the areas which must be trodden carefully.
”I’m not going to exercise executive authority where it’s a question, where I can come along and say, ‘I can do away with assault weapons.’ There’s no executive authority to do away that,” Biden said.
Biden noted that unchecked use of executive powers could undermine the existing gun control laws by setting an example that a pro-gun predecessor could emulate.
”We do that, next guy comes along and says, ‘Well, guess what? By executive order, I guess everybody can have machine guns again.’ So we gotta be careful.”
He also pointed out that endorsing the "defund the police" movement could affect Georgia’s Senate runoff elections’ outcome. Democrats hope to win the two Senate seats to share the responsibilities equally with the Republicans, who are currently leading by two seats.
During the campaigns, Biden understood that gun control and defunding police were a hard sell for Americans worried about their safety. He toned down the anti-gun propaganda to avoid hurting his campaign.
What’s surprising is that despite realizing that voters didn’t want more gun control, Biden is still determined to have such policies in place. It shows how little respect Biden has for the people’s will. The party wants to stealthily slip into power and then implement policies that Americans do not support.
