Joe Biden’s statement on gun control opposes the use of federal funds in arming and training teachers on firearm usage. The Democrat presidential nomination candidate says teachers are already overburdened and should not have extra responsibilities of ensuring the safety of their students.
“We should be passing rational gun laws, not requiring educators who already have too much on their plates to also protect the safety of their students,” the statement on his website says.
Biden overlooks the fact that training teachers on firearm usage does not only apply to school environments. Apart from defending students, a trained teacher will be able to use their skills to protect themselves and their families.
Additionally, firearm training is not a requirement but a voluntary action by passionate teachers concerned by the safety of their students. Hardly any teacher goes around complaining about the extra responsibilities of defending students. Schools that offered to train teachers had so many volunteers that they had to turn down many volunteers.
“Biden supports barring states from using federal dollars to arm or train educators to discharge firearms.”
Using federal funds to train teachers guarantees they would receive the training free of charge. Everybody else spends money to receive firearm training. Biden has complained about how teachers are forced to spend their money on school activities. He also has virtue-signaled how their benefits have been slashed.
Trump even suggested giving bonuses for trained and armed teachers. That would allow them to earn a little more while providing essential services that most schools desperately need and protecting the students they love.
“You give them a little bit of a bonus, so practically for free, you have now made the school into a hardened target,”
Supporting the use of federal funds in teacher’s firearm training would provide teachers with an additional privilege that other employees do not have. It would free them from spending the small salary they receive on gaining a critical life skill. Opposing free firearm training for teachers works against their best interests.
Biden promises to work to ensure “parents shouldn’t have to worry about whether their kids will come home from school.” He promises to achieve this by pressing the Congress to ban “assault weapons” and high capacity magazines, according to Reuters. The problem with his suggestion is that it does not provide a direct solution to the unique security challenge facing schools.
He has one cut and dried solution that he imagines is the solution to every problem. Unfortunately, banning firearms does not keep them off the streets. It is unlikely a school shooter would comply with regulations and carry only ten bullets while going on a rampage or use only the approved firearm. Biden naively places too much trust on criminals observing the same rules that have consistently failed in preventing crimes.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
