Joe Biden would introduce sweeping changes in gun policy through executive action if sworn in as president, according to his top aide.
Stef Feldman said that he would make "big bold changes" using presidential powers if the Democrats failed to flip the Senate. Currently, Republicans are leading the Senate with a 50-48 majority. However, two seats are up for grabs in Georgia's runoff elections.
Feldman said that Biden would “make big, bold changes through executive action, not just on policing and climate like we talked about previously, but in healthcare and education on gun violence, on a range of issues.”
Additionally, Feldman disclosed that Biden would prioritize gun-related issues on the list of top actionable issues using executive powers. Feldman was speaking during a virtual briefing organized by Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service.
“There’s really a lot you can do through guidance and executive action,” she said.
Liberals have been advising Biden on ways to circumvent a Republican-dominated Senate and limitations to executive action. Some suggestions include appointing a “strong ATF director,” who would undertake aggressive reclassification of firearms.
Additionally, they advised Biden to bring together the White House, the Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to address gun-related issues. He already has an anti-gun chief of staff and recently appointed another anti-gunner California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to head the HHS.
Biden's list of gun control proposals includes a federal buyback of “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines. AR-15 style firearms and magazines holding more than ten rounds would be regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA).
Owners would be required to register them and pay a $200 tax. Biden would achieve this through an aggressive reclassification of firearms campaign, where commonly-owned semi-automatic weapons would be grouped in the same category as machine-guns.
He also plans to implement universal background checks on all firearm sales, including online purchases, which he intends to abolish altogether. Biden also admitted that he would confiscate people’s firearms when he answered affirmatively, “Bingo! You’re right if you have an assault weapon.”
Speaking to CNN, Biden said that AR-15 style firearms "should be illegal to own." If certified as the winner despite the massive irregularities, Biden would undermine the Second Amendment and make America unsafe by disarming law-abiding citizens.
Perhaps our country will turn out to be like our southern neighbor where only criminals own firearms and use them to persecute law-abiding citizens with impunity.
