Kamala Harris: No Reason Why We Have "Assault Weapons" on the Streets

Kamala Harris marketed “gun safety laws” during the Colorado shootings. Unfortunately, “gun safety laws” or gun control is a misnomer for confiscating legally-owned guns while doing nothing to stop armed criminals. It also involves violating the Second Amendment rights for millions of law-abiding Americans who are least likely to use their guns to commit crimes.

“It is time for Congress to act and stop with the false choices. This is not about getting rid of the Second Amendment. It’s simply about saying we need reasonable gun safety laws. There is no reason why we have assault weapons on the streets of a civil society. They are weapons of war. They are designed to kill a lot of people quickly.”

She explained that we needed background checks and Congress needed to act. Unfortunately, the universal background checks, assault weapons ban, and red flags laws in Colorado failed to stop the assailant.

“Let us all agree that we need background checks. But the point here is Congress needs to act. And on the House side, they did. There are two bills which the president is prepared to sign, and so we need the Senate to act.”

On gun control executive orders, Harris said that Senate should act first but she would not “give up on what we must do to appeal to the hearts and minds and the reason of the members of the United States Senate.”

With the chambers split 50/50, It’s highly unlikely that Democrats would get the two-thirds required to pass gun control in the Senate, even with the help of some Republican senators.

The Biden administration has not ruled out executive action if such measures failed to pass Congress. However, executive gun control orders will be challenged in the constitutional courts, and it would be preposterous to think that such orders would pass any legal scrutiny.
