Lawmakers Decry "Being Wanded Like Criminals" With Metal Detectors "In Pelosi's Communist America"
Republican legislators refused to walk through metal detectors installed after the Jan. 6 Capitol protests. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) walked past the metal detector setting it off with her handbag, which she refused to hand over to the Capitol police.
More than a dozen GOP legislators, including Reps. Ralph Norman (R-SC), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Randy Weber (R-TX), Markwayne Mullin (R-OKLA), Paul Gosar (R- AZ), and Virginia Foxx (R-NC), reportedly walked around or set off the metal detectors.
The House Sergeant at Arms Timothy Blodgett had warned lawmakers that firearms were restricted to their offices, threatening to deny them access to the chambers unless they complied.
Democrats fumed over the Republican legislators' move to oppose the atrocious gun control measures. Rep. Don Beyer (D -Va.) asked whether the legislators understood why everybody had to be scanned for security.
"Average people do not get to bring guns into the United States Capitol in normal times," Rep. Beyer tweeted. "Get over yourselves.
The only reason ordinary Americans are prohibited from arming themselves in the U.S. Capitol is that anti-gunners consider the Second Amendment a privilege instead of a right. Various armed attacks on the Capitol have proven that gun control hardly works and that the Capitol police's protection is barely enough to protect the legislators.
Meanwhile, Rep. Boebert and others fought back against criticism for failing to submit to security clearances.
"I am legally permitted to carry my firearm in Washington, D.C. and within the Capitol complex," Colorado congresswoman tweeted. "Metal detectors outside of the House would not have stopped the violence we saw last week — it's just another political stunt by Speaker Pelosi."
Republican Congresswoman Debbie Lesko decried the treatment of legislators by the Capitol police.
"For members of Congress to enter the floor of the U.S. House, we now have to go through intense security measures, on top of the security we already go through," Rep. Lesko tweeted. "These new provisions include searches and being wanded like criminals. We now live in Pelosi's communist America!"
Pelosi omitted any gun control measures when announcing the new House rules. Rep. Boebert and other GOP legislators wrote a letter opposing any attempts to prohibit lawmakers from carrying firearms as suggested by a section of Democrats.
However, anti-gunners could not allow a crisis to go to waste. Instead, they exploited the Capitol protests to target lawmakers and prevent them from exercising their Second Amendment rights.
