Legislators In the Tar Heel State Fail To Override Gov. Cooper’s Veto After Democratic Betrayal
Democrats in North Carolina joined forces with Republicans to pass the House Bill 652 with a veto-proof majority only for them to switch sides after Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed the bill. Having initially passed the bill with a 77-38 majority in the House and 33-14 in the Senate, the Democrats voted against the veto override poll to causing the bill to achieve an outcome of 66-48, which was short of the 3/5 majority required to overturn the veto.
House Bill 652 allowed citizens to carry firearms in places of worship that double up as institutions of learning if such places did not have a “gun-free zone” policy. Essentially the bill would have allowed premises owners to decide whether to allow visitors to carry concealed weapons.
The bill would also allow sheriffs to accept refresher causes for firearm owners whose licenses had elapsed for less than 180 days instead of demanding full courses.
However, Gov. Cooper distorted the facts of the bill saying it would allow firearms in schools and endanger the lives of children and teachers. The Democratic governor needed an excuse to convince people that his actions were for the greater good to hide his political intentions.
Contrary to his interpretation, the bill only allowed firearms in places of worship including those with schools. It did not allow carry within schools neither did it obligate any premises owners to accept firearms. In addition, it would only allow carrying when the schools within those premises were not in session.
The bill would have given premises owners the power to create their firearm policies depending on their circumstances. However, like a true Democratic tyrant, Gov. Cooper believed that premises owners do not know what’s best for them and only he could decide for them. Like the true traitors they are, Democratic legislators were forced to abandon common sense and tow the party line.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
