Lightfoot: Chicago Needs More Gun Control To Tackle Violent Crimes
The mayor of Chicago responded to Trump's observation that liberal controlled cities, such as Chicago, were similar to warzones. According to police statistics, the number of murders and shootings rose by 78% and 75% in June compared to the same month last year. Fifteen (15) people were murdered during Father's Day weekend, while 105, including 12 children, were shot during the same holiday weekend.
"When you have 20 people killed, 22 people killed in one weekend in Chicago, and you have 88 shootings - it's not even conceivable. That's worse than Afghanistan. I hate to say it: That's worse than any war zone that we're in, by a lot," Trump said.
Lightfoot responded by blaming the federal government and asking for more gun control in the city with some of the most anti-second amendment laws.
"But if the president was really committed to helping us deal with our violence, he would do some easy things," Lightfoot said in an interview with MSNBC. "What he would push for is universal background checks, he would push for an assault weapons ban, he would push to make sure that people who are banned from getting on airplanes can't get guns."
Contrary to her statements, the state of Illinois has universal background checks, red flag laws, and special firearms owner identification cards (FOID). The city of Chicago enjoys the Cook County "assault weapons" ban. Consequently, Chicago enjoys stricter firearm controls than the state of Illinois.
Unfortunately, none of the laws prevents criminals from acquiring firearms from the black market.
Lightfoot has used every possible excuse to shift blame for the crime problem in her city. She blamed the states of Indiana and Texas for the gun violence taking place in Chicago.
"As long as we are challenged with having states surrounding us, notably Indiana, that has very lax gun laws, where somebody can drive across the border and literally load up a vehicle with military-grade weapons and bring them back to the city of Chicago, we're going to continue to be challenged," she said.
However, only 21% of firearms originated from Indiana, while Texas contributed only 1.8% of the total guns found in Chicago. Unless the imported firearms were used in every crime in Chicago, Lightfoot's excuse fails terribly.
Additionally, if so many illegal firearms were heading to Chicago compared to other cities, it shows that the city is already a haven for criminals. This could also be the case considering that Lightfoot restrains the police from doing their job in the name of "community relationships."
Lightfoot initially blamed coronavirus and the death of George Floyd for the spike in murders. Now she blames the federal government and the Trump administration. Like a true Democrat, Lightfoot cannot take responsibility for her actions but prefers to play the victim card.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
