Nancy Pelosi To Deduct $10,000 From GOP Lawmakers' Salary For Avoiding Metal Detectors

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced severe fines for GOP legislators circumventing metal detectors installed after pro-Trump protestors descended on the U.S. Capitol on January 6. During the announcement, Pelosi falsely accused House Republicans of disrespecting our heroes by failing to observe the atrocious measures.

"The House will soon move forward with a rule change imposing fines on those who refuse to abide by these protections," Pelosi's statement partially read. "The fine for the first offense will be $5,000 and $10,000 for the second offense."

Pelosi added that the fines would be deducted directly by the Chief Administrative Officer from the lawmakers' salaries. She described the measure as a tragic but necessary step to keep the House safe. The new measures would be put to a vote after the House reconvenes on January 21.

House Appropriations subcommittee chair and Ohio Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan praised Pelosi for proposing the disproportionate punishment to be meted on GOP lawmakers who are genuinely concerned about their safety. More than a dozen lawmakers reportedly sidestepped or triggered metal detectors.

"She's very, very concerned, as she should be, and I think she's acting appropriately," Rep. Ryan said.

However, The Chairman of the Second Amendment Caucus, Rep. Thomas Massie (R – KY), said the measure violated the 27th Amendment.

"No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened," Rep. Massie quoted.

Democrats also proposed fines on members of Congress who refused to wear masks in the chambers. They suggested a $1,000 daily fine for failing to comply with the mask mandate.

However, Pelosi said the first violation would attract a $500 fine while subsequent violations would incur $2,500.
