New York City prosecutors released a hardcore criminal on “No Bail” terms despite promising that only non-violent offenders would benefit from the offer. The police had detained Darrius Sutton, 23, after shooting another person in the courtyard of an East New York building on May 16.
Prosecutors charged Sutton with attempted murder, felony possession of a firearm, and assault with the intent of causing injury. However, the authorities released Sutton without bail despite facing serious charges.
Prosecutors said they had no reason to keep Sutton in custody after a witness recanted his testimony. However, they had both video and photo evidence of Sutton shooting the victim. They said the evidence proved that Sutton was “unsuccessful in his attempt to murder the victim.”
They never considered his criminal past or his likelihood to commit similar crimes. Federal agents say the gangster was involved in more than five shooting since 2019. During one incident on April 20, Sutton shot a member of the rival gang three times on the head, nearly killing him. He also spent two years in prison for assault with the intention of causing injuries in 2015.
Probably, the witness recanted his story to save himself after realizing that the criminal would still be set free and possibly target him for testifying against him.
After his unceremonious release, Sutton took part in three drive-by shootings that resulted in the injury of seven more people in July alone.
Luckily, after the disappointment of NYC prosecutors, federal authorities arrested Sutton on July 29 and locked him up in federal prison without bail. He faces charges of felony possession of a firearm related to the April shooting and faces a 20-year sentence in federal prison.
While Liberal politicians in cities such as New York City claim that guns are the cause of the violence taking place in their jurisdiction, their strategies are to blame. No amount of gun control would have prevented Sutton from shooting other people. The only way to guarantee the safety of other citizens is by keeping hardcore criminals like Sutton behind bars for as long as possible.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
