White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki answered questions on Biden’s gun control strategy during her daily press briefing.
One reporter asked her about the Biden administration’s timetable for gun control. Additionally, the reporter demanded to know whether the administration believed that gun control could pass in Congress.
“Well, we haven’t proposed a package at this point,” Psaki responded. “So it’s hard for me to make a prediction about its likelihood of passing.”
However, she praised Biden’s gun control history including advocating for smart guns, fighting against the gun lobby, and pushing for extended background checks.
Throughout his campaign, he promised to ban modern sporting rifles and “large capacity” magazines holding more than 10 rounds, and repealing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.
“And it is a priority to him on a personal level, but I don’t have a prediction for you, or preview for you on a timeline of a package, and certainly not what it will look like and how it goes through Congress.”
On using executive action to enact gun control laws, Psaki said that President Biden has “a range of actions at his disposal” and has not ruled out using them.
Biden promised to introduce a gun control bill in Congress on his first day in office but failed to follow through.
“My first day of office, I’m going to send a bill to the Congress repealing the liability protection for gun manufacturers, closing the background check loopholes and waiting period.”
Despite having the majority in the House and splitting Senate 50/50, Biden needs to convince additional 10 senators to support his gun control laws. Facing those odds, he sees executive action as a likely plan of action.
However, he promised not to take such actions when their constitutionality was in question. He knows that such actions would be challenged in court and declared unconstitutional.
Biden’s likely plan of action is through the ATF and commercial regulations to reduce firearm sales rather than legislation or executive action.
Given his hatred for Americans’ constitutionally-protected second amendment rights and the control of Congress, Biden will try to get away with as many violations as possible. Consequently, Psaki was right in pointing out that Biden hasn’t ruled out any options.
