Governor Greg Abbot announced a special election within 30 days to replace Pat Fallon, who vacated to run for Texas' 4th Congressional District. The snap election was expected to undermine Shelley Luther, a newcomer, and guarantee the election of Drew Springer, a career politician and the State representative for the 68th District.
"Abbott gave us 30 days and thought we would get beat," Luther said, "so you give us two more months and see what happens."
Now that the date is yet to be set, Luther stands a better chance of winning by a larger margin than she did during the primary election. Despite starting at a disadvantage, Luther finished ahead of her opponent with a 32.17% to 31.93% lead. The only Democrat garnered 21%.
Luther gained her lead despite Springer having the support of Fallon and other establishment politicians. The two GOP candidates will face off in a runoff election whose date is yet to be decided.
Luther has established herself as the clear favorite for the grassroots, the ordinary Texan. She displayed her strong leadership qualities by calling out the hypocrisy of the long-term politicians. Unlike Springer, she confronted Gov. Abbott on his slow coronavirus reopening response that hurt Texas businesses and workers. Shelley candidly declared that "our tyrant governor has embarrassed us completely."
Springer was also disappointed by Gov. Abbott's slow response but chose blind loyalty over Texas residents' interests. He was too afraid of Gov. Abbott's reaction for disagreeing with him.
"You're not going to get any bills passed unless the governor signs them," Springer said.
Luther disapproved of such sycophancy, saying, "Our politicians are more loyal to Abbott than us."
Additionally, since his election in 2012, Springer refused to support or sponsor any Constitutional Carry bill in Texas. According to the Texas Gun Rights PAC, the Former State Representative Jonathan Stickland contacted him over 12 times urging him to support the Constitutional Carry to no avail. In 2015, Springer admitted to the Houston Chronicle that he wasn't prepared to support or vote for the bill.
"When Representative Springer had the chance, he let you down, he let us down, he let Constitutional Carry in Texas down," Stickland said.
Springer recently started supporting Constitutional Carry now that it's an election issue. However, you cannot trust him to keep his word, given his previous political record on the subject. A malleable candidate who only switches sides when it's convenient for them is hardly a trustworthy politician.
On the contrary, Shelley is a dedicated supporter of Constitutional Carry. She has earned the endorsement of Texas Gun Rights PAC, the same group that called out Springer's hypocrisy on gun rights.
Given her zeal to fight for issues that matter to the conservative grassroots, Shelley can be trusted to follow through with the Constitutional Carry and other constitutional rights. She will call out the hypocrisy of the establishment politicians, Like Springer, who are afraid of rocking the boat to maintain the status quo.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
