Shootings Up By Over 92% In Gun-Controlled Mayor Bill De Blasio's New York City
Despite having draconian gun control laws, shootings are up by over 92% in Mayor Bill de Blasio's New York. Figures released by the New York Police Department (NYPD) show that the city recorded 1,235 shootings in 2020. This number was a 92.4% rise compared to the same period last year.
Similarly, the number of shooting victims increased from 762 in 2019 to 1,515 in 2020. This jump represented more than a 100% increase. According to Breitbart News, NYC recorded its 1,000th shooting on August 30, 2020. The city recorded only 537 shootings on the day in 2019. Last month alone, NYC recorded 242 shootings, more than a 200% increase from the last year's figure of 91.
New York City has some of the country's strictest gun laws, including an "assault weapons" ban and safe storage laws. Other gun control measures include the "high capacity" magazine ban and universal background laws.
Registration of ammunition is also mandatory in the Big Apple City. Potential firearm buyers must also have a handgun license or rifle/shotgun permit to purchase a handgun or a rifle, respectively.
Additionally, obtaining a concealed carry license is almost impossible in New York City. Applicants must provide a justifiable reason to own a firearm. The issuing officer has the authority to approve or reject the application based on personal judgment. California has similar laws requiring that an applicant be of a "good moral character" and have a "justifiable reason" to own a gun.
However, NYC's stringent gun control laws have failed to prevent criminals from illegally obtaining firearms and using them to victimize law-abiding New Yorkers.
In the entire state of New York (which has equally strict gun laws), 90% of guns used in crimes are acquired illegally. This situation renders any textbook gun control law useless in preventing crimes. Instead, the gun control restrictions put law-abiding citizens at a disadvantage when confronted by armed criminals.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
