Survey: Gun Policy Among the Least of Concerns for Most Americans
We’ve been treated to staggering figures claiming that the majority of American’s support gun control with some polls claiming unanimity on the issue. A new survey paints a different picture. According to a survey by Pew Research, gun policy is the third least issue of concern to most Americans. According to the survey, terrorism concerned most Americans with an average of 74% of voters concerned. The survey indicated that 87% of Republicans were highly concerned with terrorism in comparison to 60% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters. The major issue of concern for Democrats was protecting the environment with 85% while healthcare and education followed at 80% each. The survey interviewed 1504 adults by telephone earlier this year.
Ironically, gun policy scored lower for Democrats than both the Republicans and the national average. For Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters, gun policy did not rank among the top five most pressing issues but managed to score at 6th position out of 18 policy items with 66%. The issue ranked lower for republicans at 17th position out of 18 items with 25% of GOP leaning voters showing concern. Overall ranking put gun policy at just 46%, the third least item of concern for the whole country. Surprisingly, Republican voters also showed more concerns for reducing crime at 57% compared to 53% for Democrat voters. Closely related statistics showed that Republicans cared more for strengthening the military at 66% compared to 30% for democratic voters.

This comes as a surprise when all Democratic presidential contenders have made gun policy among the top priority (if not the top priority) items during the presidential debates. Some candidates such as Michael Bloomberg have dedicated personal finances on addressing the issue while almost entirely neglecting other more important concerns. The last Democratic debate witnessed candidates trading accusations on gun control. Bernie Sanders promised to go further than just banning “assault rifles” while Joe Biden reiterated his desire to go after arm manufacturers.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
