VA CITY COUNCIL OFFICIAL BRINGS AN AR-15 TO A COUNCIL MEETING
In support of the Second Amendment, A city official in Virginia showed up to a council meeting with an AR-15 rifle. The council member from Portsmouth, Mr. Nathan Clerk, displayed the firearm during the council meeting in opposition to the proposed gun control legislation.
The display of the firearm triggered some council members who criticized him for his actions. The Vice Mayor, Lisa Lucas-Burke, termed his actions as embarrassing, disgraceful, and heartbreaking. She added that the display was distracting.
“It was a disgrace, disheartening and an embarrassment,” Vice Mayor Lisa Lucas-Burke wrote to the council Thursday. “Most of us were blindsided by the display.”
Another critic of his action called the display an “open intimidation” and called for his resignation.
Councilor Nathan sponsored a motion to designate his city as a “Second Amendment Constitutional City.” The motion succeeded on a 4-3 vote in support of the Second Amendment. The Assistant mayor was among the three council members who opposed the designation.
Council Bill Moody and other councilors supported his decision by saying that he had the legal right to do so. They also indicated that Councilor Nathan had made a press release of his intention to carry the firearm to the council meeting.
“I do not believe that Council Clark needs to apologize for exercising his right as a law enforcement officer to carry his weapon to a public meeting,” Councilor Moody said.
Councilor Nathan’s action took place in the backdrop of the ongoing gun control crisis that is threatening to throw the state into civil war. Various pro-gun groups and militia have already been preparing to attend the Lobby Day gun rally in a show of force and gun sales have been soaring to the second-highest record in state history.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
