Virginia House of Delegates Rams “Assault Weapons” Ban, “High Capacity” Magazines Confiscation Bill

Virginia Democrats unilaterally passed a series of gun control measures including the one authorizing the state government to confiscate the “high capacity” magazines. Bill HB961 also bans the sale of firearms such as AR-15 arbitrarily labeled as “assault rifles.” Any magazine holding more than 12 rounds falls under this classification. The bill imposes a 1-year prison sentence for owning such a magazine regardless of whether the owner bought it legally.

The bill passed with a 51-48 majority and will now proceed for a vote in the state Senate which the Democrats control by a slim majority of 21-19. This is the second gun control bill to pass the house during this legislative session. Should the bill succeed in the Senate, millions of Virginians who own such magazines will be forced to destroy or surrender their property to the government or become felons overnight.

A small section of the Democrats joined Republicans in voting against Bill HB961 despite its success. Earlier this month, Democratic Sens. Chap Petersen, D-Fairfax City, and Creigh Deeds, D-Bath joined Republicans in voting against Northam’s backed gun control bill outlawing the use of firearms by individuals under the age of 18. Opponents indicated that the bill would have criminalized youth hunting and create a loophole for charging innocent parents with reckless endangerment.

Northan has backed a slew of gun control bills that the Bloomberg cronies are determined to pass during the legislative session. The democrats-controlled house rams the bills with little discussion or public participation. Consequently, 91 out of 95 counties have adopted Second Amendment sanctuary resolutions prohibiting local officials from enforcing the unconstitutional gun control regulations. Many law-abiding citizens and county sheriffs have vowed not to comply with the unconstitutional gun control laws.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is pushing universal background checks in our state, and if left unchecked, it will not be long until we see bills like this getting traction in Austin. Texas is embarrassingly ranked 29th for gun rights, and with the help of the political elites in Austin, we will surely rank among New York, California, and Illinois if left to their own devices. Please join our fight today, and help us restore Texas' place as the standard for the U.S.
