The Biden administration’s silence on gun control could be misconstrued to mean that the left won’t regulate firearms after all. However, the perceived silence is just the calm before the storm. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki disclosed that the administration was preparing to enact various gun control measures in the coming weeks.
Biden’s Domestic policy advisor Susan Rice, White House Public Engagement Director Cedric Richmond, and representatives from Giffords, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Moms Demand Action hosted a virtual meeting to discuss gun control. Psaki said that the anti-gun groups will play a critical role in the Biden administration’s anti-gun agenda.
Gun sales skyrocketed in the first month of the year partly in anticipation of the Biden administration’s stricter gun control laws. The FBI conducted 4,288,240 background checks in January 2021, a 61.7% increase compared to January 2020. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) adjusted figures showed a 75.2% increase during the same period.
In January, Biden promised to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act immediately after taking office.
"My first day in office," Biden declares in a video, according to Ammoland, "I'm going to send a bill to Congress repealing the liability protection for gun manufacturers, closing the background check loopholes and waiting period that now let too many people slip through the cracks."
During the campaign, he promised to institute a federal buyback program targeting modern sporting rifles and “large capacity” magazines, a term referring to ammunition feeding devices holding more than ten rounds.
Those intending to keep their property would register them under the National Firearms Act (NFA) and pay a $200 tax. The program would cost Americans about $34 billion, according to the NSSF figures.
The administration would also weaponize the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to crack down on gun kits, unfinished gun parts, and pistol braces. The ATF would also reclassify common firearms and ban their import.
With the Left controlling Congress, Biden will pass gun control through a legislative process with the aid of some rogue Republicans. Two GOP Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have already re-introduced the Extreme Risk Protection Order and Violence Prevention Act, establishing the gun confiscation "Red Flag" laws.
